Ten minutes later, I’ve convened an emergency meeting in the bathroom of an empty guest room, with Callie, my grandmother, and Naomi, who had to hurry over from the salon.

Callie has temporarily abandoned her “never talking to you again” rule, but she made sure to let me know she’s not happy about it.

“Please tell me you’re giving up now,” Callie says as I scrub my chest. She brought me a high-necked pink blouse from her closet. I’m standing in front of the mirror in my bra and jeans, scrubbing away at my chest with exfoliating soap. It’s not helping. My arm, neck, and upper chest look like a Rorschach blot.

“Hello, have you met me? I’m just getting started,” I reply, surveying myself with a steely-eyed glare.

“Are you insane?”
